Worked example — mulching a border

Mulch coverage and depth guidance
- Weed suppression: 5–7.5cm over bare, weed-free soil — thinner layers let light through.
- 1m³ of mulch covers about 13m² at 7.5cm deep.
- Keep mulch a few centimetres clear of plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot.
- Playground areas need certified play bark at 10–15cm for impact absorption.
