Worked example: family lawn
A rectangular lawn 6m × 5m is 30m². With 5% wastage that's 31.5m², so 32 rolls. The calculator also shows grass seed pricing for the same area — often a quarter of the cost.
One standard turf roll covers 1m², so your roll count is simply your area plus 5–10% for cutting around edges, curves and obstacles — order the extra rolls rather than fall one short on laying day, because turf is perishable. Lay it within 24 hours of delivery, the same day in summer; rolled turf heats up and yellows fast on the pallet. Spring and autumn give the best rooting conditions, with the rain doing your watering for you.
Preparation decides whether the lawn thrives: strip weeds, dig over or rotavate, then firm and level 10–15cm of screened topsoil before a single roll goes down. Lay rolls in a staggered brick pattern with the joints butted tight, and walk on the laid turf via a plank rather than trampling the soil. Water thoroughly within an hour of laying and keep it moist for two to three weeks — the first mow comes when it reaches 5–7cm, taking off only the top third.
