Worked example: 20m boundary
A 20m run ÷ 1.83m = 10.9, so 11 panels. A 10-panel trade pack plus one single usually beats 11 singles — the calculator shows both prices side by side.
Standard UK panels are 1.83m (6ft) wide, so divide your boundary length by 1.83 and round up — and remember you always need one more post than panels. Posts go at least 600mm into the ground for a 1.8m fence, roughly a third of their length, which is why a 6ft fence needs 8ft (2.4m) posts. In exposed gardens, go deeper and consider concrete posts; wind load on a solid panel run is what flattens fences every winter.
Use one 20kg bag of post mix per post in normal ground, two in soft or sandy soil, and set the corner posts first with a string line between them to keep the run straight. Fit gravel boards at the base so timber panels sit clear of the soil — it's the single cheapest way to double panel life. Before ordering, check which boundary you actually own and whether the 2m planning limit restricts height, especially next to a road or pavement.
