Worked example — filling a raised bed
- 1Raised bed measures 2.4m × 1.2m, filled 25cm deep.
- 2Volume: 2.4 × 1.2 × 0.25 = 0.72m³ = 720 litres of topsoil.
- 3Add 10% for settling and levelling: about 0.8m³ in total.
- 4That's one bulk bag — topsoil weighs roughly 1.3 tonnes per m³, so a full bed is about a tonne of soil.
Topsoil coverage and depth guidance
- New lawn underlay: 10–15cm of screened topsoil, firmed and levelled.
- Flower beds and borders: 10–20cm; raised vegetable beds: 20–30cm.
- 1m³ = 1,000 litres and covers 10m² at 10cm deep.
